Cisco 1900, 2900 and 3900 Series Routers

Whether you are designing networks for small business, branch offices, or enterprise campuses, chances are at some point you will need to take advantage of Cisco’s highly popular Gen 2 Integrated Services Router platform. From the inexpensive, small form factor 1921 to the feature packed, highly customizable 3945, Cisco has a Gen2 ISR for every routing scenario. With so many hardware options, software and licensing bundles to choose from, picking the right ISR for your network can feel like an intimidating task – but it doesn’t have to be! Read on, and we’ll walk you through the basic differences between the 1900, 2900 and 3900 series of Cisco routers.

1900 Series

The 1900 series routers provide basic routing features for small networks, such as branch locations or small businesses. If all you need is basic connectivity with the security, reliability and feature set you've come to expect from Cisco devices, the 1900 series may be just what you need.

2900 Series

The 2900 series is more widely used, and can adapt to fit a wide range of networks. The 2900 series has 4 different sub-models, the 2901, 2911, 2921 and 2951. These routers improve upon the 1941 by offering additional processing power, interface card support, service module and PVDM options, and overall feature support. For midsized networks, or networks that require specific services such as VoIP processing, hardware VPN support, or higher port density, the 2900 series is the way to go.

3900 Series

The 3900 series is the largest and most powerful line of routers in the Gen 2 ISR family. These routers offer a wide array of interfaces, EHWIC and Service Module slots, PVDM options, and other performance / license based upgrades. If your router needs to support a large business, high density branch location, datacenter, or service-heavy network, the 3900 series has the power and features you need.
