The 4500-X Series 10 gigabit aggregation switch provides you with a scalable, reliable virtual switching solution. Delivering up to 800 Gbps of switching (1.6-Tbps with VSS) across 16 SFP ports, the 4500X-16SFP+ provides the high speed connections you need in a compact, feature packed platform. In addition, this series of switches is enhanced with application monitoring through Flexible Netflow and eight ports of line rate bidirectional Switched/Remote Port Analyzer.

The WS-C4500X-16SFP+ comes equipped with 16 fixed 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports, and also supports an optional C4KX-NM-8SFP expansion module, allowing for 8 additional 10GE interfaces to be added to the device. With Front to Back Airflow, 5 field replaceable fan slots, support for dual power supplies with AC to DC and DC to AC failover, and comprehensive high availability features, the 4500X-16SFP+ is the perfect blend of performance, flexibility, and reliability.

WS-C4500X-16SFP+ Airflow Options

The 4500X series has multiple airflow options available, allowing this switch to be physically installed in a variety of ways without making environmental sacrifices. The WS-C4500X-16SFP+ orderable sku comes with front to back airflow by default. This means the airflow comes IN to the switch from the port side (front), and exhausts out the fan side (back).

You can easily tell the difference between front-to-back and back-to-front airflow on the WS-C4500X-16SFP+ by looking at the color of the fans. Front-to-back airflow is indicated by the presence of burgundy colored fans and power levers, while back-to-front airflow is colored blue.

If you ever forget which color belongs to which airflow option, you can also look at the diagrams printed on the fan removal levers. You can see by the direction of the arrows in the photograph below that the airflow will be exiting the switch through the fan. Since the fan is installed in the back of the switch, this shows that the unit has front to back airflow.

It is important to note that even if airflow isn’t a major concern in your network, your 4500-X switch must have matching fan and power supply airflow directions. You cannot mix a burgundy fan with a blue power supply, or a burgundy fan with a blue fan. This means if you want to change the airflow direction of your switch you will need to replace both the fans AND the power supplies.
