The Cisco ASR 1000 Series SPA Interface Processor, based on the Cisco I-Flex configuration, combines shared port connectors and SPA interface processors, exploiting an extensible design that encourages service prioritization for voice, video, and data services. Enterprise and service provider customers can take advantage of improved slot economics resulting from modular port adapters that are interchangeable across Cisco routing platforms.This leads to high-performance support for features like deep-packet inspection with full Layer 2 perceivability, a zone-based firewall with line-speed throughput, and hardware-assisted cryptography for secure WAN access.

The SIP10 can perform different roles in the network thanks to its processing power- it can act as an internet gateway, conveying multi gigabit firewall at 10Gbps; a broadband aggregation router for up to 64,000 sessions, with support for VoiP and video services; an enterprise WAN aggregator that can convey multi gigabit 3DES/AES encryption and WAN optimization for mission-critical applications, among other situations.
